The Blood of Dawnwalker Character Customization

Last updated: September 2, 2026

There is no character creator. You play Coen, a predefined protagonist, and no announcement has been made about building a character from scratch or altering his core physical traits. What you can customise is his appearance through armour sets, and — far more meaningfully — his build across three skill trees, two separate day and night loadouts, and how far down the corruption path you take him.

No character creator has been announced

There are no reports that The Blood of Dawnwalker features a character creator letting you build a protagonist from scratch. Every piece of official material presents Coen as a fixed, written character with his own voice, backstory and motivation.

That is a deliberate design choice rather than an omission. Coen has a sick mother, siblings who tease him, a history working the silver mines that explains why the vampiric curse only partly took, and a fixed goal of saving his family. The narrative sandbox gives you control over what he does, not over who he is.

Whether you can change his core physical traits at all has not been announced. Treat any claim about sliders, hairstyles or facial options as unverified.

Armour sets are how you change his look

Appearance customisation runs entirely through equipment. Coen can be geared up with armour sets that visibly change how he looks, alongside weapons and accessories.

The Sangoran Wayfarer's Armour Set is the clearest example. It bears the emblem of a nameless travelling smith, comes as a pre-order and special-edition bonus, and lets you dress Coen distinctively from the opening hours. It is an early unlock rather than an exclusive — Bandai Namco has confirmed it can also be earned later through normal progression.

Beyond that, the world is full of armour: tops and bottoms, light, medium and heavy weights, in rarity tiers from common through epic to legendary. Reviewers describe a good amount of visually distinct gear with different attributes.

The catch: look and stats are tied together

No transmog or appearance-override system has been announced. That means what you wear is what you get, both visually and mechanically, and outgrowing a piece you like the look of means losing the look.

It also means the day/night split constrains your appearance. Gear carries day, night or dual icons, and some pieces cannot be equipped in the wrong phase, so Coen may simply look different after dark whether you intended that or not.

Medium and heavy armour carry stat penalties until you unlock Second Skin 1 and 2 in the Swordmastery tree. Until then, choosing a heavier set for looks costs you real performance.

Build customisation is the real system

Where the game does let you shape Coen is progression. Three skill trees are available: Swordmastery, which works day and night; Witchcraft, which works only in daylight; and Vampirism, which works only after dark.

Each tree is gated differently. Swordmastery and Witchcraft ranks generally need a manual, book or scroll found or bought in the world before you can spend points, and Witchcraft additionally draws on points earned at haunted sites. Vampirism progresses on corruption rather than experience.

Every unlock also costs a segment of your 30-day budget, so a build is not just a set of choices about power — it is a set of choices about time. You cannot max everything: a full clear yields roughly 160-170 skill points, and a single Ultimate Perk alone costs 39.

Two loadouts, effectively two characters

Because day and night use different power sets, you maintain separate gear, consumables and ability sets for each. Daytime Coen is a swordsman and hex caster; night-time Coen is a claw-fighting, wall-climbing predator.

Quick slots are split the same way — four for day, four for night. Hexes and physical sword abilities sit on the day bar; bite, shriek and traversal abilities sit on the night bar. Some abilities overlap and work in both forms, though they behave differently.

You can lean hard into one side. Building for sword damage and Swordmastery perks lets you keep fighting with steel at night; building for claws and vampirism makes the night form dramatically stronger. Both are viable, and the game does not push you toward either.

Corruption as roleplay customisation

The closest thing to a moral character sheet is corruption. It rises every time Coen drinks blood, and it is the currency that unlocks the deeper vampiric perks.

Human blood heals far more and raises corruption faster; animals are the slower, more humane route with a much weaker healing return. You can play a deliberately restrained Coen who feeds only on rats and wild animals, at the cost of never accessing the strongest vampire abilities.

There is a real risk on the other side. Running low on hunger can push Coen into feeding during dialogue, which can kill quest givers, friends or romance options and permanently break their questlines. There is no reputation system tracking your choices, so this is emergent rather than scored.

Difficulty and interface customisation

The difficulty settings are unusually granular. There are four presets from Story up to Duelist, but individual facets can be adjusted separately: enemy health and damage, how often and aggressively they attack, and Coen's stamina. On easier settings enemy animations are slowed to give you more time to read incoming attacks.

You can also turn directional indicators on or off, and toggle omni-attack and omni-block for assisted combat at a stamina cost. Turning the indicators off is the closest thing to a hard mode beyond Duelist.

Camera distance is set separately for exploration and combat, an option Rebel Wolves added after community feedback about tight camera placement. Control remapping, sensitivity and invert options are all present, and there are no rapid button-press prompts.

Still to be confirmed

  • Whether any option exists to alter Coen's core physical traits — not announced.
  • Whether a transmog or appearance-override system exists — not announced.
  • Whether rising corruption visibly changes Coen's appearance — to be confirmed.
  • Whether the two inventory presets function as full day/night appearance swaps — to be confirmed.
