Blood of the Dawnwalker Characters

Last updated: September 2, 2026

You play Coen, a Dawnwalker caught between human and vampire. The valley is ruled by Brencis, a Roman-born vampire who seized Vale Sangora two years ago, and his three vrakhir boyars — Ambrus in the north, Xanthe in the southeast and Bakir in the southwest. The other confirmed named characters are Anca, Lacra and Marat.

Coen, the Dawnwalker

Coen is a young man who had already been tested by a hard life before any of this started. He has a sick mother and a family depending on him, and that responsibility is what the game keeps pressing on.

Becoming a Dawnwalker upends everything. The transformation tests his values and resolve, but the official framing is that it never shakes his determination to protect the people he loves — the character has a fixed motivation even though the player controls how he pursues it.

Mechanically he is a predefined protagonist rather than a created one, so there is no character creator. His younger sister Lunka features in the opening, when she is suspected of carrying the plague.

Brencis, Knyaz of Vale Sangora

Brencis is the usurper and the game's central antagonist. He was born in the ancient Roman Empire, comes from a faraway land, and remains vividly proud of that past and heritage. Pre-launch material dates his birth to AD 131, to a noble family, noting he rose through the Senate before being turned.

He took the valley two years before the story begins and rules it alongside his three vrakhir boyars. Many people believe he saved them — and in a sense he did, healing the plague with vampire blood — but not for their benefit, and the valley is gradually working that out.

He resides in Greifberg Castle above Svartrau, overseeing everything from there. The official line is that reaching him in his fortress will not be easy, but difficult does not mean impossible — consistent with the studio's confirmation that you can attempt the castle straight out of the prologue.

The three vrakhir boyars

Brencis carved Vale Sangora into three dominions and handed each to one of his officers. Each runs a different arm of the regime, holds a different region, and has an anger meter that fills as you disrupt their operations — maxing one opens a quest tied to that vampire.

BoyarRegion and role
AmbrusNorthern Vale Sangora. Runs the human blood supply chain — bleeding prisoners, transport and storage. The youngest vrakhir, turned during Brencis's takeover, flamboyant and with much to prove.
XantheSoutheastern Vale Sangora. Procures supernatural advantages for the army: bizarre experiments, growing the Blood Guard, unearthing the valley's ancient secrets. Has lived there for centuries, long before Brencis arrived.
BakirSouthwestern Vale Sangora. The Mad Khan keeps the population obedient, hands out rewards to regime supporters and punishments to dissidents, sometimes as a grotesque public spectacle.

What makes each boyar dangerous

Ambrus is the odd one out socially: despite his position he seems to genuinely prefer human company to that of other vrakhiri. His need to prove both competence and loyalty to his sire drives most of what he does, and he makes a show of all of it.

Xanthe is the oldest vampire of the group, with origins traced back to Ancient Greece where she was a priestess. Why she pledges obedience to a vrakhir younger than herself is unexplained — it could be convenience, or something more disturbing. Pre-launch material also describes her body and mind bearing the ravages of time while she understands the world better than anyone.

Bakir is the straightforward threat. An experienced warrior with an unabashed enjoyment of cruelty, described in earlier material as a bloodthirsty warmonger who was just as cruel as a human while travelling Central Asia. The official description notes it is hard to say whether he is more frightening when he wants to kill you or when he wants to be your friend.

Anca

Anca has been a quiet constant at Coen's side, guiding him patiently, teaching him to read and to look past what is plainly written. Her framing is that there was always something more, something unspoken.

The closer you get, the clearer it becomes that she carries a secret heavy enough to set her apart from the rest of the village. She is described elsewhere as Laslea's local witch and herbalist, and the prologue introduces her when Coen is sent to fetch medicine for his mother.

She is one of the three confirmed romance options.

Lacra

Where one vrakhir appears, more follow — some eager to serve the new arrival, others wanting to remove them. Lacra falls firmly into the second category.

Her stated reason for being in the valley is that someone sent her to get rid of Brencis. The official description is careful to say this is what she claims, which is worth keeping in mind.

She is also a confirmed romance option, with a route described as leading to a divergent story outcome.

Marat

Marat leads the Manumits, the mortal rebellion opposing the vrakhiri. He is courageous and charismatic, and he inspires real loyalty in his followers.

He is also permanently on guard. Constantly wary of betrayal, he trusts very few people, which makes proving your loyalty to his underground faction a process rather than a conversation.

Romance coverage refers to the Manumit leader as Crake, and one guide writes the name as Crake or Marat interchangeably, so they appear to be the same character. On that reading Marat is romanceable.
