What a Dawnwalker actually is
Coen is not a standard vampire and not fully human either. Bandai Namco's description is that he is no longer human, but not fully a vampire — and the defining detail is that the sun does not burn him.
The in-fiction reason offered in pre-launch material is that years working in a local silver mine left his body partially rejecting the curse when Brencis tried to turn him. He kept his human form in daylight and gained vampiric power after dark.
That turns the classic vampire day/night split into a gameplay dial rather than a restriction. You keep human connections and daytime society while still having a predator's toolkit available every night.
Daytime: the human form
By day Coen fights with a sword using medieval fencing stances and directional blocking. He also gets witchcraft — hexes cast with his own blood that cover weapon buffs, area interrupts, shields, crowd control and pure utility.
Some content is daylight-only. Haunted sites can only be activated in human form because they require blood magic, and they typically involve a combat trial against spectral beings. Clearing one usually rewards a chest that can contain witchcraft manuals, which is the main way the witchcraft tree progresses.
Compel Soul is the signature daytime utility hex, letting Coen interrogate certain corpses. Mercurial Fervour is the daytime traversal hex, adding a haste effect to sprinting. Neither works after dark.
Daytime weaknesses
The human form has no passive healing whatsoever. Your health does not regenerate between fights, so food, potions and crafted consumables are the only way back up.
Witchcraft compounds that, since hexes are paid for in health. Casting aggressively in a hard fight means burning the resource you cannot passively recover.
You are also simply squishier. Reviewers consistently describe the human form as the more fragile of the two, which is why unprepared daytime fights against higher-level enemies go badly.
Nighttime: the vampire form
At night the traversal options open up completely. Shadowstep teleports Coen short distances, including onto walls and ceilings, and Planeshift and Death from Above extend the kit further. The wolf form, unlocked via the Shapeshift perk, is the fastest way to cross the valley.
Combat shifts to claws and fangs, with better attack speed and higher raw strength. Vampiric abilities include Voracious Bite, Piercing Shriek, Blood Surge and Shadow Storm, plus later unlocks such as mind control. You can still draw your sword at night if you prefer it.
Places you cannot reach as a human become reachable after dark, which means some locations and routes are effectively night-gated regardless of how you like to fight.
Hunger, feeding and corruption
At night your health bar doubles as a hunger gauge. Voracious Bite restores it by feeding, and you can also drink from gathered blood vials the way you would use a potion. Food and drink do not heal you in vampire form.
Feeding is a choice with a dial. Grapple a target and you can stop early, leaving them unconscious and lootable, or keep going and kill them. Animals — rats, deer, wolves, boar — are a subtler option, but humans give far better returns.
Every drink raises corruption, which is what unlocks deeper vampire perks. The danger is at the other end: running on your last health segment can push Coen into feeding during conversation, and because almost every NPC can die, that can cost you a quest giver mid-dialogue.
The world changes with the cycle
This is not only about your abilities. An early fort might be heavily guarded at night while daytime guards, seeing a human, will simply let you walk in. The same objective can have entirely different approaches depending on when you arrive.
Quests change too. Rebel Wolves has said some play out differently depending on whether you start them in daylight or darkness — before you have made a single dialogue choice. Some activities and quests only exist in one phase at all.
NPC availability follows the cycle as well. Someone present during the day may be gone at night, which turns timing into part of your planning rather than a detail.
Two loadouts, two kits
Because the forms are separate, you maintain two sets of equipment. Some gear carries day, night or both icons and literally cannot be used in the wrong phase, so you swap sets from the inventory rather than running one build.
Quick slots are split the same way: four day slots and four night slots. Hexes and gold physical abilities live on the day bar; bite, shriek and traversal live on the night bar. Some powers overlap and work in both, though they can behave differently.
A useful habit is to keep the same button meaning the same role in both kits — your opener stays your opener whether it is a daytime hex or a night-time shriek.
Still to be confirmed
- The complete list of which abilities carry across both forms and how each behaves differently — to be confirmed.
- Whether animal blood raises corruption slowly or not at all — pre-launch statements were ambiguous.
- The full set of location and quest types that are exclusive to one phase — to be confirmed.
